Connecting a smart cube

A smart cube sends what you do with it to xcross.gg over Bluetooth, so the app can time your solves and follow them without a keypress. Connecting takes a minute, and the steps depend on your platform.

Pick your platform

In a browser, connecting relies on Web Bluetooth. Not every browser has it, so that is the first thing to check.

What you need

A recent Chrome, Edge or Opera, on a computer or on Android. Safari and Firefox do not support Web Bluetooth, and no browser on iPhone or iPad does either, so use the xcross.gg app there.

  • This browser supports Web Bluetooth

Open xcross.gg in Chrome, Edge or Opera. Safari and Firefox cannot connect to a smart cube.

  • Bluetooth is available on this device

Turn Bluetooth on, and check that the browser is allowed to use it. If it is already on, the browser may have Web Bluetooth turned off.

Step by step

  1. Wake the cube by turning one face. A cube left idle goes quiet and will not show up.
  2. Make sure the cube is not still connected somewhere else: another tab, another app, or your phone. A cube only talks to one of them at a time.
  3. Open the Bluetooth panel from the Bluetooth icon in the top bar, or from the timer and trainer screens.
  4. Press the Bluetooth button on the Smart Cube row. Your browser opens its own device list, so pick the one matching your cube.
  5. The first time, xcross.gg needs your cube's address to talk to it. This is usually automatic, and if it fails the app asks you for it and shows where to find it. The row turns violet with a battery level once you are connected.

If it does not connect

  • Nothing happens when you press connect, and no device list opens: Chrome may have Web Bluetooth switched off. Open chrome://flags, search for bluetooth, turn on the options it shows, and relaunch the browser.
  • The list opens but stays empty: turn a face to wake the cube, charge it if the battery is flat, and disconnect it from any other device or app.
  • On macOS, the browser itself needs permission. Check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Bluetooth, and enable your browser.
  • Bluetooth is off on the computer: turn it on, then try again.

Once connected

  • If the cube on screen no longer matches how you are holding the real one, the gyroscope has drifted. Turn the bottom face back and forth twice, D' D D' D, to recenter it. In trainers where you pick a cross color, the gesture moves to that cross face.
  • to change the gyroscope mode, rotation smoothness, home grip angles and turn animation speed.
  • If the app thinks the cube is in a different state than it really is, physically solve the cube, then use Reset cube state in the info dialog.
Couldn't load the app

A network or update issue stopped xcross.gg from loading. Reloading usually fixes it.
