Inspection trainer

Plan the cross, the first pairs or the whole solve in inspection, then execute it. Inspection and execution are timed separately.

Configuration

Shown with every scramble. Needed to pick a cross length.

How inspection training works

What inspection training is

In a real solve you get a short inspection before the timer starts, 15 seconds under WCA regulations. Fast solvers use it to plan far more than the cross. Here you pick a target, plan up to it during inspection, then execute what you planned. It is a hard exercise, but probably the one that gives a cuber the most: the further you plan, the fewer pauses you need to work out what comes next, which cuts the total solve time drastically.

How the drill works

Pick a target, from the cross to the full solve (PLL): the cross, EO, one to four pairs, OLL or PLL. Hold and release space or the screen to start inspecting, press as you make your first turn, then press once more when you reach the target. Inspection and execution are timed separately.

How to practice here

Start with a target you can plan reliably, such as the cross, and move it up one step at a time. The targets go up to the full solve, but do not worry if you cannot see that far, or if progress is slow: this exercise is hard and takes patience. Report the step you actually reached: a missed target counts as a DNF in your averages, which keeps the planning honest. You can also set a cross color and an optimal cross length to train specific crosses.

How long is inspection in a competition?

15 seconds under WCA regulations.

How far should I be able to plan?

There is no distance you are expected to reach, and planning up to PLL is not something to expect quickly. Most very good cubers stop at the cross plus one pair. Only the best in the world manage to plan their whole F2L during inspection, which is elite level.

What happens if I do not reach my target?

You report the step you actually reached. A missed target counts as a DNF in your averages.

Is inspection training worth the effort?

It is hard, but probably the exercise that gives a cuber the most. The further you plan, the fewer pauses you need to work out what comes next, and that cuts the total solve time drastically.
